Meet The Pepperjam Team #29 - Meet The Pepperjam All-Stars

Friday, August 10th, 2007

FINALLY!

This is a half hour candid interview with Kris Jones, Michael Jones, Shoemoney and Mediadonis (aka Marcus). It took some video manipulation to cut the thing down to youtube size, but it is done. WOO!

I had the pleasure of interviewing these guys last Friday. This video takes place a day before Kris Jones’ wedding so any reference to “this weekend” really means this past weekend. I wanted to ask them questions ranging from the serious to the insane, so watch as KJones and company answer questions regarding affiliate marketing, favorite food and drink and other very important questions.

Meet The Pepperjam All-Star Team:

For those of you who don’t know the “rules” behind the Meet the Pepperjam Video Series, here they are:

Every Friday Pepperjam will post a new video interview of a member of our staff - everyone will be included - affiliates managers, executives, search-engine marketing managers, directors, software engineers, assistants, online media buyers, and interns. The person being interviewed won’t know he / she has been chosen until about 30 seconds before the interview - this way you’ll get an unrehearsed, real world look at the employee…hopefully, this will make it interesting and non-corporate, which is what we are known and respected for across the internet marketing industry.

Why are we doing this? Well, I am proud of our team and I think you’ll find them as interesting and intelligent as I do. Also, I’m a student of viral video and the social media space and I want to test the waters as it relates to what corporate america is doing (and not doing) to spread buzz and build next generation work places.

Finally, I just thought it would be cool to put some people in front of a video camera that have never done so before, have a little bit of fun, and see if Pepperjam can spread some additional buzz about why we are the leader in online marketing.

FYI - all videos will also be posted to YouTube. If you think what we are doing is outside-the-box and interesting please blog about it and share the story with the world.

Kris Jones Makes Appearance on Reality Show - Next Internet Millionaire

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

Internet Marketing and Google Adsense Expert Joel Comm is in final production of an Apprentice-like Reality Show called - Next Internet Millionaire. Joel is a New York Times best-selling author (Adsense Code), internet guru, and international speaker.

Next Internet Millionaire.

While I’ve spoken at various conferences with Joel over the years it was only recently during Affiliate Summit - Miami that Joel and I had lunch and discussed some of our latest projects.

Joel asked me if I would fly to Loveland, Colorado and shoot an episode of Next Internet Millionaire - his latest venture. Since the production of the show is still underway I’m not at liberty to give specifics about my appearance, although I will say that it was a combo co-host / guest appearance and that it was one of the coolest experiences of my internet marketing life!

The Next Internet Millionaire is the first reality TV show that will be broadcast entirely over the web.

Similar in theme to other reality shows like American Idol and America’s Got Talent there was a multi-week open audition where thousands of contestants submitted videos, which were posted on YouTube for the world to see, about why they thought they should be the next internet millionaire, win $25K cash, and a multi-million dollar marketing partnership with Joel Comm.

After receiving thousands of videos, Joel cut the contestants down to the top 50 and then chose 12 finalists that were flown to Colorado for taping.

During each show, much like Survivor and the Apprentice, contestants compete in various tasks (again, I’m not yet allowed to say much here). However, the show also includes a really brilliant educational component where Joel flies in leading internet marketing experts from around the world to share insights on how to make millions of dollars online. In short, the show is like Apprentice with a hint of Survivor with the goal of finding (or creating) the Next Internet Millionaire.

When I arrived in Colorado I was amazed to find out that Next Internet Millionaire is being taped in an amazing 50,000 square foot warehouse / production studio - honestly, the venue felt like I was on a Hollywood set with multiple cameras shooting in every direction at all times.

For now I’ll say that I’m expecting to be on show seven (7) - this was the last week of production and the first show of the Next Internet Millionaire series will air LIVE around the middle of August 2007 - to learn more visit nextinternetmillionaire.com.

Stay tuned for more info!

Make sure to tune in to the show starting in mid August!

ValueClick Acquires Super Affiliate MeziMedia for (up to) $352 Million

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Mezi Media

ValueClick (VCLK) announced today the aquisition of MeziMedia, which includes Super Affiliate websites Coupon Mountain and Smarter.com for $100 million in cash and up to an additional $252 million in performance-based bonuses. That’s a lot of cabbage.

Coupon Mountain is a very familar name in the affiliate marketing space having started somewhere back in the late 1990’s. In fact, Coupon Mountain is one of the first big players that I can remember back when I started in 1999.

ValueClick’s acquisition comes after the recent acquisition of Traffic Strategies by Linkshare, Commission Junction’s (a ValueClick company) chief rival.

What does this mean for super affiliates?

First, it is a testament that being an affiliate marketer is a legitimate business. Besides the potential of multi-million dollar buyout opportunity, affiliate marketing has immense profit potential with the ability to take those profits and create a much larger, scalable business. For instance, it’s amazing to think that I started Pepperjam as a solo affiliate marketer just seven (7) years ago and used those profits to create one of the fastest growing companies in the United States with nearly 100 employees. Without affiliate marketing there would be no Pepperjam.

Second, super affiliates aren’t just work-from-home serial entrepreneurs. Yes, the industry is made up of a lot of 9 to 5′ers who’ve had the pleasure of quitting their day jobs, but some of the biggest players are large corporations such as Upromise, Ravenwood Marketing, Clicks2Customers, eBates, and FatWallet, among dozens others. In the early days these companies would send 1 or 2 representatives a piece to industry conferences such as Affiliate Summit. Now, these same corporations send teams of people. Also, a number of these companies have taken on venture capital and / or have been acquired for millions of dollars by even larger corporations.

Third, this means that more acquisitions are on the horizon. I would say the following affiliate marketing companies have the best shot at an acquisition within the next 12 - 18 months: Clicks2Customers, Quit Your Day Job, Affiliate Summit, Shoemoney Media, and FatWallet. Of course there are other players that may get acquired or take on large rounds of venture capital financing, which is a precursor to being acquired, but these are just a few names I would be willing to invest in!

Congratulations to our friends at MeziMedia - it’s been a pleasure working with you over the years and we look forward to continuing our relationship with you as part of the ValueClick brand.

Meet The Pepperjam Team - Video #25 - Chris Thomas, Senior Sales Account Executive

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Oh ya………….Meet the Pepperjam Team has hit the quarter century mark - 25 videos!!!

This time around we interview Chris Thomas, a Pepperjam Senior Sales Account Executive.

I had the honor of interviewing Chris during our recent trip to Miami, FL for Affiliate Summit - East. Actually, the video was shot on Saturday - the night before the start of the conference - in South Beach from the Penthouse Suite of Hotel Ocean on Ocean Drive.

Chris Thomas is an amazingly passionate and high energy guy. When he’s not at work he is working out, boating, or spending quality time with his large and very accomplished family.

Here’s a picture of Chris with Dennis Rodman on the last night of the Affiliate Summit Conference - the picture was taken at the Delano in South Beach during a small party sponsored by Pepperjam.

Here’s Chris’ video:

Pepperjam Recap: Affiliate Summit 2007 - Miami

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

CLICK HERE to see Pepperjam’s Affiliate Summit - Miami Pics!

Affiliate Summit 2007 - Miami was without question the best affiliate marketing conference ever held. The host venue (InterContinental Miami) was an excellent choice, networking opportunities were abundant, and attendees included some of the most influencial leaders in both e-commerce, direct marketing, and internet marketing.

Special thanks to Shawn Collins and Missy Ward for constantly improving Affiliate Summit and for making sure that this event was the best ever.

Pic 1Pic 2Pic 3

Team Pepperjam was in full force with seven (7) members of our staff, including myself, Aaron Baker (VP of Sales), Brock Siegel (VP of Business Development), Robyn Martin (Director of Affiliate Marketing), Maura Goodwin (Assistant Director of Affiliate Marketing), and Kate Sarnak (Super Senior Affiliate Manager).

We had an amazing time with many of our industry friends, including Shoemoney, Kevin (Income.com / John Reese), Lee Dodd, David Adams, Shmuel Tennenhaus (YouTube Celeb), Asif Malik, Joel Comm (Next Internet Millionaire), Josh & Ken from DentalPlans.com, and too many more to mention.

Pic 4Pic 5Pic 6

Saturday: Robyn and I were already in Miami staying in South Beach since Thursday - the rest of the gang arrived on Saturday afternoon…I thought it would be nice to reward my team by flying them a day early and showing them what South Beach is all about.

Needless to say, we had an amazing time in South Beach!

Sunday: We spent some time at the Affiliate Summit Meet Market, which was packed with people and was great networking. We were a bit disappointed that we didn’t have a Meet Market table since many people expected us to and were looking for us - I guess there was some confusion with the fact that we wanted a table and it wasn’t included as an exhibitor. Anyway, the Meet Market was definitely a good time.

Sunday evening we went to a party sponsored by ShareASale and ABESTWEB - the party was really, really fun and I had the opportunity to meet a few handfuls of new friends, as well as spend some time with my friend Todd Crawford from Digital River and others. The entire Pepperjam Team seemed to be having a blast!

Monday: We arrived at the Pepperjam exhibit booth around 9:00a.m. so that the booth was ready to go and the energy drinks were cold….

One of the highlights of our booth was the fact that we were handing out Who’s Your Daddy Energy Drinks for FREE - a special thanks goes to Dan at Who’s our Daddy, Inc. for sponsoring Pepperjam at the event - honestly, the energy drinks were a huge hit and everybody was talking about how they rocked!

Our booth was staffed with our booth babes, which consisted of myself, NOT, Brock, Aaron, Chris, and the girls (Robyn, Maura, & Kate) - at Pepperjam, unlike other unnamed companies, we are proud of the fact that our booth babes actually work for us! The booth was crowded with people all day - once again, it went down as one of the most popular booths at the entire show - it’s like a never ending party at our booth wherever we go….people stop by to see where the parties are or to get VIP tickets; people stop by our booth for free swag; people stop by our booth to say hi, and prospective clients stop by our booth and are blown away by our energy.

We had a ton of attendees come to our booth since we were handing out VIP tickets to the party we were co-sponsoring later that night at Mansion.

The party at Mansion, which was sponsored by Pepperjam, WebmasterRadio, Copeac and others was amazing! A really classy event at a great venue. The evening definitely turned out to be a highlight of the conference and we consider it one of the best parties we’ve ever sponsored! Check out our PICS from the party! By the way - we sponsored an after party along with Zanox at Tantra that was also a great time - thanks to our friends, clients, and prospective clients who attended the after party with us.

Tuesday: After a late night Monday I started off Tuesday with breakfast in my suite, while the rest of the gang was down at the booth meeting with prospective clients. I had a series of meetings set-up throughout the day so I didn’t spend too much time at the booth, but I stopped by long enough to see the mob of people surrounding the Pepperjam Team.

Prior to my own presentation I attended a panel that included Jeremy Schoemaker and Lee Dodd on making money with community forumns. I was very impressed with Jeremy and Lee’s ability to offer so many sound money making tips - if you left that session without 10 new money making ideas you must have been wearing ear plugs. It was an outstanding session.

My session, which I did solo, was on “the Confluence of Search-Engine and Affiliate Marketing” and it was very well attended. At one point I asked the audience how many of them had made more than $10,000 by either reading this blog or hearing previous speeches I’ve given - I was blown away when about 10 or so people rasied their hand - I was deeply honored and it allowed me to give what I thought was a very informative presentation. I should also thank Who’s Your Daddy again here since one of the highlights of my presentation was the fact that everyone in attendance got FREE ENERGY DRINKS!!!

On Monday evening I did two private meetings…my favorite being a sitdown with Shoemoney, Lee Dodd, and David Adams to talk about Elite Retreat among other things.

Robyn and I were leaving the next morning so we all went to dinner and then Robyn and I went back to the room the pack our bags.

All in all the Affiliate Summit was one of the best conferences ever!

Affiliate Summit in Review

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

We arrived safely in Pennsylvania via Las Vegas after spending several days at the Affiliate Summit. First, I’d like to thank Robyn, Aaron, Brock, Kate, Maura, Megan, Kim, and Tara for being an incredible team - Pepperjam was well represented and if you attended the Affiliate Summit to met at least one of us. Second, I’d like to give a shout out to some of our closest friends who we had the opportunity to spend some high-quality time with: Shoemoney, Dillsmack, Andrea, Marcus, Schmuly, CrazyEgg guys, Nicole, David Lewis, Asif, and the Best of the Web guys. Also, we had a blast spending time with and meeting many for the first time Andrew Wee, Kris, Zanox team, CareerBuilder guys, Paresh (Ice.com), Scott Hazard, Alex’s Coupons, and many others.

Day 1 - Sunday
Longest day of the trip since most of our team was stuck in transit because of bad weather on the east coast - in fact, the trip was supposed to take roughly 4 hours and ended up taking over 18 hours with a combo of delays, cancelled flights and missed connecting flights. The good news for me - I arrived early Sunday morning with no problem because I only had to fly from San Fran since I was there on Friday and Saturday night for the Inc. 500 Conference and Awards Ceremony (stay tuned for pics from that event).

The gang got in around 10:30pm and not surprisingly were exhausted - the night ended early, but I had the opportunity throughout the day to spend some time with friends like Shoemoney, David Dellanave, Neil Patel, Marcus Tandler, Brock Siegel and others.

Day 2 - Monday

Best day of the conference. We spent most of the day at our exhibit booth, which was without question one of the top three attended booths of the conference. Many of our industry friends stopped by, while we were able to network with industry people and prospective clients. One of the cool highlights of the day was watching Nicole - Shoemoney’s hired model - hand out exclusive Shoemoney (black) t-shirts…the shirts all went in about two hours or so with the help of some of the Pepperjam girls who assisted Nicole. Also, it was cool that our booth was across from the WebmasterRadio.fm booth (they were reporting LIVE from the show floor) and Revenue Magazine since they were handing out blue cupcakes.

After lunch I attended the “Super Affiliate” Question and Answer panel that featured Shoemoney - in general, the discussion wasn’t that good because there wasn’t a moderator. However, Shoemoney stepped up and played that role and did a solid job - also, his comments were on a much higher-level than the other two panelists, which was a disappointment since the others were supposed to be Super Affiliates - I can think of at least 20 other Super Affiliates that could have been paired with Shoemoney to make the panel awesome. In fact, while the session was Video Taped rumor has it that the video was pulled because one of the panelists was extremely unprofessional and lacked respect for some of the attendees.

On Monday night we went to a pre-party at the Palms sponsored by Jamster - the beginning of the party, which was actually a pitch for us and others to support the Jamster Affiliate program on CJ and / or Zanox, was a terrible bore. However, the fact that it was held in the MTV Real World Suite was pretty cool and also turned into a pretty cool networking opportunity once the presentation was complete. In particular, the team at Zanox was really impressive.

After the pre-party we went to the Tryst Nightclub At Wynn Las Vegas - the event was sponsored by Digital River’s One Network (great affiliate network). I estimate that there were about 1,000 people at this party - it was amazing - rumor has it that the event cost over $150,000.

The event started out with an awards ceremony that didn’t work out all that well since most people were interested in partying and therefore it was almost impossible to hear the MC - Todd Crawford. Award winners included Todd Crawford who got the Legend Award (great choice here), Affiliate of the Year - Scott Hazard from CouponPouch.com, and Jim Kukral from ReveNews.com who won Blogger of the Year. Some advice for next year’s award ceremony planning committee - hold the event before serving drinks or hold it in conjunction with some other event that takes place during the Summit.

The party at the Wynn was one of the best (might have been the best!) parties and networking events I’ve ever gone to at a conference - very, very classy event.

After the Wynn the Pepperjam Team and a small posse of about 20 friends met-up with Shoemoney, Dillsmack, Marcus, Andrea and others at the Ghost Bar (one of the most famous clubs / bars in Vegas, located at the Palms). The partying went straight until the bouncers asked us to leave since the bar was closing (somewhere around 4:00am). HINT: If you drink red bull and vodka until 4:00a.m. it will be difficult to fall asleep - also, you’ll still feel the effects of the red bull long into the next evening.

Day 3 - Tuesday

If you read the above you’ve probably guessed that I was still feeling the effects of the night before, especially the red bull. I met up with the rest of the Pepperjam Team at the exhibit booth, which was once again 5-deep with friends and prospective clients. I had to speak at 3:30 - 4:30pm later that day so for the most part I took it easy prior to my speech. Throughout the day I met a lot of really cool and interesting people, but for the most part I stood back and watched my incredible staff do their thing - these guys (and gals) are the best in the business - if you didn’t have the opportunity to meet either Robyn, Maura, Kate, Kim, Tara, Brock or Aaron you missed out. Pictures coming soon!

My speech was titled “the Confluence of Search and Affiliate Marketing.” However, what I really talked about was affiliate marketing search arbitrage from the perspective of an affiliate - I shared some tips and strategies for how to use search arbitrage to make significant income across various affiliate and ad networks. In general, I felt the event was well attended and after my “formal” presentation there was an excellent Q & A where the audience was very involved and asked excellent questions. In fact, one of the attendees said that he felt my presentation was the best of the entire Affiliate Summit - while I doubt that, I felt that I was very candid and offered some tips that have the potential of making a few people in the room very wealthy.

Day 4 - Wednesday

We flew home safely from Vegas to Wilkes-Barre, PA via Philly.

The conference was a really awesome time - definitely the best Affiliate Summit to date. While I believe the industry is diversifying very quickly I strongly believe that Pepperjam remains one of the hottest and most buzz worthy companies in all of online marketing. If you attended the event and walked by our booth, listened to the enthusiasm of any our our staff, or simply heard someone at the event talking about how Pepperjam seems to be everywhere, you would have left knowing that Pepperjam is a force in this industry - a force that I am proud to be part of - a company that is worthy of the rewards (2006, Inc. 500) and recognitions we are receiving…In no small part, it is due to the fact that the Pepperjam team is made up of the best minds in e-commerce and internet marketing (them, not me.)

A special thanks goes to Shawn Collins and Missy Ward for hosting the event and to Team Pepperjam for making it one of the best professional experiences of my life.
