Fast Company

Attention Pepperjam Fans and Readers,

I just received notification from Lynne Johnson, Senior Editor at Fast Company, that Pepperjam has been selected to compete for the Fast Company Magazine “Fast 50″ list. More about what the award is about below.

The competition occurs online at fastcompany.com so I’m asking for your support and vote.

VOTE FOR PEPPERJAM HERE!

The coolest thing about this nomination is that the award doesn’t celebrate growth or revenue as much as it recognizes the impact that businesses like Pepperjam make on the community and world we live in.

You’ll learn more about why Fast Company chose Pepperjam by following the link below. However, what I can tell you is that we are very proud of the “kind” of company we created more than anything else.

It was nice to be recognized by Inc. Magazine for the last two consecutive years as one of the fastest growing businesses in the United States, but it is an even greater honor to be recognized for the impact we have made on our small community in Wilkes-Barre, PA - this is what the Fast Company “Fast 50″ is all about.

Pepperam represents the potential that each of us have as human beings to be creative, work hard, and achieve our greatest potential. As a business, I believe Pepperjam is worthy of this award because we have successfully created a work environment dominated by creativity and opportunity that has spurred the same in other businesses across the world.

As a nominee we need your vote in order to make the official “Fast 50″ list.

You can vote for Pepperjam on the FastCompany.com Web site located HERE.

I’ve included some more info below about the award.

CJ’s Version of Next Generation Affiliate Marketing - Add a Desktop Shortcut

Monday, January 28th, 2008

QUESTION: Has the time finally come for a real alternative to the big three traditional affiliate networks?

That’s a question for everyone in the affiliate marketing industry to carefully ponder.

While you’re thinking about the above question here’s something to consider:

As part of the launch of Pepperjam Network here is what Shawn Collins, Founder of Affiliate Summit, had to say:

Even after all these years using Commission Junction on the merchant and affiliate side, I still find it terribly clumsy to find what I want. With Pepperjam Network it is quick and easy. Pepperjam Network is what an affiliate network would look like if it were built from a wish list from both the affiliate and merchant perspective.”

Shawn Collins
Co-Founder,
Affiliate Summit

Note that prior to Shawn providing Pepperjam with a testimonial for Pepperjam Network he spent a considerable amount of time comparing and contrasting his experiences on other networks and asking the question: Does Pepperjam Network address many of the concerns I (and others) have about the other major networks?

Shawn’s quote speaks for itself. So do the dozen+ other testimonials we received from affiliate marketing experts.

Apparently, on the day of the Pepperjam Network launch (1/15/08) Shawn got a phone call from Kerri Pollard, General Manager of Commission Junction, asking for details about why Shawn knocked Commission Junction (and presumably praised Pepperjam Network, at CJ’s expense.)

Shawn made a post today with details of his communication with Kerri Pollard, as well as Craig Battles, Principal Product Development Manager at Commission Junction.

While I am glad that the launch of Pepperjam Network instigated this call and temporary resolution, Shawn (and hundreds of others) have been complaining in private and in public about CJ’s old school, outdated interface for years.

I find Commission Junction’s (parent company ValueClick) interest / concern with Shawn’s sentiments very interesting and encouraging, especially to the viability of Pepperjam Network.

The truth is that the affiliate marketing industry was gasping for air in need of a next generation affiliate network. Our friends at Commission Junction, Linkshare, and Performics have been busy for the last several years competing with one another, leaving open the opportunity for CPA Networks like AzoogleAds and Hydra Network, and now a hybrid CPA / traditional network like Pepperjam Network, to come in and address real problems that have been plaguing the industry.

I will note that of the alternatives / supplements to the big three traditional affiliate networks, Pepperjam Network is the only Network that attempts to address what I believe are the two most significant issues plaguing the affiliate marketing industry - (1) poor, unreliable communication tools and (2) lack of affiliate transparency.

If you are an advertiser….how many times have you attempted to locate affiliate information on any of the major networks with little or no success? How many times have you spent 30 minutes or more drafting an e-mail, only to send the e-mail and have it returned to sender? When was the last time you became frustrated (and gave up?) and exhausted by a failed attempt to address an affiliate concern (or to proactively reach out to a performing affiliate)? Did the problem take days or weeks (or never got addressed) to address because of poor communication tools and unreliable contact information? Here’s the worst scenario, which according to many Pepperjam clients is most concerning…..Repeated attempts to contact a rogue affiliate fail because of inadequate contact information and a complete lack of transparency.

As an advertiser, you’ve been hungry for more information about your affiliates, not less. That’s why Pepperjam built Pepperjam Network - to put power back in the hands of affiliates and advertisers to build relationships that are not only built upon results, but also upon being open, honest, and trustworthy. We think this next generation approach is in the best interest of affiliates and advertisers alike.

While I went off on a bit of a tangent above, the truth is that the major networks have failed for years to provide affiliates and advertisers with adequate communication tools. At the same time, the networks have been reluctant to provide ALL advertisers with necessary information about the promotional methods affiliates use to generate transactions. As a result, the affiliate marketing industry has become less transparent, at the same time advertisers have been calling for more transparency. Advertisers want more affiliate transparency so that they have the power (not the Network) to control brand integrity and acceptable promotional methods.

In short, Pepperjam Network not only has a stylish Web 2.0 interface, but we successfully address and provide our advertisers and affiliates with a solution to the poor communication and inadequate transparency conundrum. If you don’t believe me, take Pepperjam Network for a spin and give me your feedback.

OK, back to the primary purpose of this post - kudos to Commission Junction for stepping up to the plate.

We have long considered (and still do) Commission Junction a strategic partner. As a leading outsourced affiliate program management agency we have been working with Commission Junction very closely to address advertiser and affiliate concerns.

Therefore, any progress on CJ’s part to address concerns is a positive sign of progress.

In Shawn’s post, he talks about how he expressed to CJ that his main gripe was having to drill down to get details on commissions earned. Shawn mentioned how he’d like to be able to see specific reporting data upon log-in.

Note that this type of reporting data is available upon log-in on Pepperjam Network.

CJ’s Response:

“Craig suggested that I create a desktop shortcut and browser favorite to the Performance Reports page on CJ. And if that page didn’t have all of the details I wanted, then I could create a Saved Report (”Saving a report actually saves the query, not the data, so you can create very complex customized queries that can be saved and run with one click.”) and save the actual report results page in my Favorites or a desktop shortcut.”

Hmmmmmmmmm. That’s a Web 1.0 solution. If I had to create a desktop shortcut for every Web 1.0 problem I had my desktop would be quite sloppy.

With all due respect, why not actually address the problem, instead of recommending a solution that is really a short-term fix at best?

By the way, I tend to agree with Shawn that the reporting (and most other parts) of the Commission Junction interface are clunky.

It’s not because Commission Junction doesn’t have the adequate resources to address the real problem - CJ has some incredibly talented and intelligent workers.

It’s that CJ is trying to fix an old system that is in need of a Web 2.0 update.

That’s just my two cents.

Shawn / Kerri - thanks for the opportunity for me to make the case why Pepperjam Network represents next generation affiliate marketing.

With Pepperjam Network, we’ve built the technology that others have been asking the major networks to build for years.

Take Pepperjam Network for a spin at www.pepperjamnetwork.com and tell us what you think.

Please also provide us with feedback so we can make it even better.

Meet The Pepperjam Team Logo

Welcome to this weeks edition of Meet The Pepperjam Team.

This week I want you to meet Sandy. Sandy is a member of our account / sales team and has been with us for a substantial period. Sandy is one of the friendliest nicest people to ever grace the Pepperjam offices, every morning as she walks by she makes sure to say Hello to everyone, with out fail. :) Anyway Sandy brings a level of cheeriness and and upbeat attitude that is seldom seen in people. Thanks Sandy.

Now Onto the Video!

For those of you who don’t know the “rules” behind the Meet the Pepperjam Video Series, here they are:

Every Friday Pepperjam will post a new video interview of a member of our staff - everyone will be included - affiliates managers, executives, search-engine marketing managers, directors, software engineers, assistants, online media buyers, and interns. The person being interviewed won’t know he / she has been chosen until about 30 seconds before the interview - this way you’ll get an unrehearsed, real world look at the employee…hopefully, this will make it interesting and non-corporate, which is what we are known and respected for across the internet marketing industry.

Why are we doing this? Well, I am proud of our team and I think you’ll find them as interesting and intelligent as I do. Also, I’m a student of viral video and the social media space and I want to test the waters as it relates to what corporate america is doing (and not doing) to spread buzz and build next generation work places.

Finally, I just thought it would be cool to put some people in front of a video camera that have never done so before, have a little bit of fun, and see if Pepperjam can spread some additional buzz about why we are the leader in online marketing.

FYI - all videos will also be posted to YouTube. If you think what we are doing is outside-the-box and interesting please blog about it and share the story with the world.

Video Tutorial of pepperjamADS

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Pepperjam Network launched last week to the support of thousands (that’s right!!!) of affiliate marketers from around the world.

Simply stated, Pepperjam Network was an amazingly successful launch - we are thrilled by the response we have gotten from the affiliate marketing and online money making community.

One of the surprising highlights of all the attention we have gotten is the very positive response to pepperjamADS.

pepperjamADS is a really cool affiliate marketing widget that you can use to serve customized contextual ads from one or multiple Pepperjam Network advertisers at the same time. The ad units come in various shapes and sizes. You can mix and mash ads from any of your merchant partners. For instance, you can create a fashion widget by selecting various ads from multiple fashion merchants. Likewise, you can create a specific widget with ads from any one merchant.

The thing that really separates pepperjamADS technology from anything else is that you get to choose the ads you want in the widget. Think about it - on CJ, Linkshare, ShareASale, Performics, Azoogle, and others you simply select a specific banner or specific text link for one merchant. You are limited to promoting one specific merchant per creative.

Not so with pepperjamADS!

With pepperjamADS you create the ad widget. Your ad widget can contain ads from multiple merchants or any single merchant.

Check out the pepperjamADS Video Tutorial below where I walk you through the Pepperjam Network interface and show you how to create your very own affiliate marketing widget.

Affiliate marketing will NEVER be the same - you’re now in control!

By the way, if you haven’t joined Pepperjam Network you will need to in order to take pepperjamADS for a test drive.

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

The rumors are true.

We launched Pepperjam Network today.

The blogosphere is raging - please sign-up HERE and give your own review.

Here’s the press release we sent out this morning:

Pepperjam Announces Launch of Next Generation Affiliate Marketing Network

Wilkes-Barre, PA. (PR NEWSWIRE) January 15, 2008 — Pepperjam, a two-time Inc. Magazine fastest growing company and industry leading full-service internet marketing agency, today announced the launch of Pepperjam Network, a proprietary next generation affiliate marketing network.

If you are an advertiser or affiliate and would like to sign-up for Pepperjam Network please visit www.pepperjamnetwork.com.

“Pepperjam Network represents an evolution in affiliate marketing. The creation of Pepperjam Network represents eight years of research and development and the combined ideas, feedback, and intelligence of hundreds of affiliate marketers and advertisers. Pepperjam Network will forever change the face of affiliate marketing by putting power back in the hands of affiliates and advertisers to build long-term, profitable partnerships through better communication tools and transparency,” said Kristopher B. Jones, President & CEO of Pepperjam.

Among a variety of affiliate marketing enhancements, Pepperjam Network addresses the two primary shortcomings of other existing affiliate networks, namely (1) poor, unreliable communication tools and (2) lack of affiliate transparency. With Pepperjam Network, affiliates and advertisers can communicate in real-time via Pepperjam Chat™, thereby providing a reliable communication system to build stronger, more profitable partnerships. Pepperjam Network also provides advertisers with an unprecedented measure of affiliate transparency, which helps to establish trust, protect brand integrity, and lays the groundwork for open, long-term, profitable relationships.

Pepperjam Network also introduces pepperjamADS, which is a first-ever affiliate marketing widget that affiliates can use to serve customized contextual ads from one or multiple Pepperjam Network advertisers at the same time.

Pepperjam Network was designed to make the experience of affiliate marketing profitable and educational, with the goal of allowing affiliates and advertisers to truly understand and maximize the critical affiliate marketing channel. Unlike the traditional networks, Pepperjam Network uses Web 2.0 technology to provide affiliates and advertisers with an easy-to-use, cutting-edge interface designed to facilitate and optimize the affiliate marketing process. For instance, Pepperjam Network offers industry leading source-level tracking and reporting - this robust technology is especially beneficial to search marketing and sophisticated super affiliates that want to take advantage of the most up-to-date technology available to track commissions at the keyword level.

Here is just a sample of what many industry experts are saying about Pepperjam Network:

“Even after all these years using Commission Junction on the merchant and affiliate side, I still find it terribly clumsy to find what I want. With Pepperjam Network it is quick and easy. Pepperjam Network is what an affiliate network would look like if it were built from a wish list from both the affiliate and merchant perspective,” said Shawn Collins, Cofounder of Affiliate Summit.

“As both an advertiser and a affiliate, I am on the lookout for affiliate marketing systems that meet all our company’s needs. Pepperjam Network is without a doubt the most comprehensive, practical and useful affiliate marketing system I have seen to date. Pepperjam Network demonstrates that it is possible to combine style with substance in a network that provides site owners and advertisers with tools and resources to increase their bottom line,” said Joel Comm, New York Times Best-Selling author and CEO, InfoMedia, Inc.

Welcome to this weeks edition of Meet The Pepperjam Team.

This week we would like you to Meet a relatively new addition to the Pepperjam team, her name is Erin Killian and she has been here roughly 2 months. Erin certainly surprised me when she told me her love for all things nerdy including video games and sci-fi. Who does your… MEDIA?

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Hello again pepperjamBLOG readers! It’s me, Kat, director of online media planning and management here at Pepperjam. As one of my several resolutions for 2008 (others include not falling asleep on the couch, going to the gym, and drinking more water), I have challenged myself to become a more active PPJ blogger. Ok let’s not lie – Kris Jones (our CEO) urged my participation – but I’m more than happy to oblige. Media really took off in 2007, transforming the internet space with video, social media, and open source ads. And 2008 is predicted to outpace ‘07 by double digits. According to a TNS Media Intelligence report, Online ad spending is likely to rise 14% this year – making it the only media outlet hitting double digit growth in ‘08 (outpacing TV, Radio, newspaper and outdoor).

So it really begs the question: what is your online marketing strategy for ‘08? Banners, expandables, pre-roll, video, social media, contextual ads, behavioral targeting, retargeting, email? The possibilities on the internet are endless! Why try to hash through all the ins and outs of media yourself? (trust me – it would take a very, very long time…) Let the media buying professionals here at pepperjamMEDIA do it for you. We have the experience, the knowledge and the technology to make any campaign successful. I know, I know - this is sounding a lot like an ad for teamMEDIA isn’t? Well it certainly is not meant to be. Think of it more as a plug for teamMedia….my baby here at Pepperjam. With Media exploding the way it is, can you really blame me for wanting to share all the new types of ad placements and technologies that exist out there? I think not!

Speaking of technology – did any of you read the Media Post Article Monday about DoubleClick’s DFA Spotlight technology?? Well if not, you can find it here. If you recall, pepperjam and DoubleClick partnered up last year to create one of the biggest powerhouses in online marketing. We have used this technology with some of the largest advertisers out there – Nordstrom and Old Spice – and have had tremendous successes with their rich media campaigns. If you are an advertiser with Rich Media ads – you need not look any further for an agency to negotiate media buys on your behalf. Allow pepperjam to place your media buy and utilize DFA’s cutting edge technology to optimize your rich media campaigns. With DFA’s Spotlight tool we will not only be able to calculate how many times your ad was served and clicked on, but we will also be able to measure conversion rates for various actions taken within rich media ads, including rollovers, ad expansions, multiple click-throughs and video plays. Accountability is key – we want our advertisers to be able to create the most effective ad campaigns out there, and with the help of Spotlight, that’s exactly what pepperjamMEDIA can help you do.

So come on… give pepperjamMEDIA a try. You know you want to.

New Year’s Resolutions - Take Some Tips from Tony Robbins

Friday, January 4th, 2008

Since our Meet the Pepperjam Team video won’t go up until this weekend or Monday (since Dean - our videoblogger - is out sick), I thought I’d share with you a clip from one of our clients (and my personal mentors) Anthony Robbins.

For those of you that have committed to a New Year’s Resolution this video and Tony’s products - www.tonyrobbins.com - may be of use to you in keeping with your goals. If you are an affiliate and would like to promote Tony’s stuff join our program located on www.cj.com.

Tony Robbins is a life coach. A life coach is someone who provides guidance on how to improve the quality of your life. Tony is not a “think positive” and your life will immediately get better kind of guy. Instead, Tony provides strategies and shares insight into how you can effectively take control of your life and achieve your goals.

I first started following Tony Robbins when I was 14 years old (I’m now 32). One of my close childhood friends, Brian Drew, and I started listening to Personal Power I (one of Tony’s early products) after Brian’s dad (Dr. Drew…another early mentor of mine) suggested it would be a great idea. At the time we weren’t interested in changing our life much - we both wanted to increase the amount of weight we could bench press and I think we both wanted to improve our appearance, but it was Tony’s energy that really captivated me and got me interested. Since that time I’ve incorporated many of Tony’s tips into my life and I’ve accomplished a lot and had a heck of a time in the process. I’ve had the opportunity to see Tony LIVE in-person several times, including doing two fire walks (once with the entire Pepperjam Exec team!!!!!!) and still can’t believe that Tony has become one of Pepperjam’s most cherished clients (for over 1 year now). If you see me at a conference and want to talk more about my (and your) experiences with Tony Robbins please don’t hesitate to stop get my attention - you’ll immediately know we have something in common other than online marketing!

I can go on and on about Tony Robbins, but the point of this post is to provide you with a relatively brief video from Tony that he did during a TED conference a few years back. If you like what you see / hear I challenge you to visit Tony’s Web site and buy some of his products. Make sure you join his affiliate program first and we’ll give you a percentage of your sale back as a commission!!! And if you haven’t attended a Tony show it will change your life forever.

Happy New Year!
