Meet The Pepperjam Team - Video #11 - Senior Affiliate Manager, Tara DeGiusto

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Once again it is time for the most talked about Pepperjamblog feature. Meet The Pepperjam Team! This week we are featuring a veteran of the Pepperjam Team, A girl who has been in the trenches with us when we were just a small company. Meet Tara DeGiusto.

Tara, a senior affiliate manager here at Pepperjam, has worked on many accounts, her most notable ones include The Bed Bath Store and ShopJLo. In her spare time Tara enjoys bar tending (and who doesn’t), going out and hanging out with her super-cool dog Jake.

Tara has been with us for 1 and a half years and is one of the most experienced Senior Affiliate Managers, she is also a very dedicated employee and an asset to the Affiliate Team.

Meet Tara Degiusto:

For those of you who don’t know the “rules” behind the Meet the Pepperjam Video Series, here they are:

Every Friday Pepperjam will post a new video interview of a member of our staff - everyone will be included - affiliates managers, executives, search-engine marketing managers, directors, software engineers, assistants, online media buyers, and interns. The person being interviewed won’t know he / she has been chosen until about 30 seconds before the interview - this way you’ll get an unrehearsed, real world look at the employee…hopefully, this will make it interesting and non-corporate, which is what we are known and respected for across the internet marketing industry.

Why are we doing this? Well, I am proud of our team and I think you’ll find them as interesting and intelligent as I do. Also, I’m a student of viral video and the social media space and I want to test the waters as it relates to what corporate america is doing (and not doing) to spread buzz and build next generation work places.

Finally, I just thought it would be cool to put some people in front of a video camera that have never done so before, have a little bit of fun, and see if Pepperjam can spread some additional buzz about why we are the leader in online marketing.

FYI - all videos will also be posted to YouTube. If you think what we are doing is outside-the-box and interesting please blog about it and share the story with the world.

VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Kris Jones Interviews Neil Patel on Social Media

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

During the recent Elite Retreat in San Francisco I had the opportunity to interview Neil Patel, CTO of Pronet Advertising and fellow Elite Retreat speaker. For those of you who don’t know Neil, he is one of the foremost experts on Social Media websites like Digg.com, StumbleUpon, and YouTube - in fact, the Wall Street Journal recently referred to Neil as one of the “Wizards of Buzz.”

Neil Patel

Aside from Elite Retreat Neil is a world class speaker at conferences such as Search-Engine Strategies, PubCon, and ecomXpo and is a contributor to one of my favorite blogs - SearchEngineLand.com.

Watch Neil’s video below. For more on Neil you can read his blog at http://www.pronetadvertising.com

Affiliate Marketing - Thinking Outside the Box

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

At the recent Elite Retreat Conference in San Francisco I had the opportunity to listen and learn from some of the top search and affiliate marketing experts in the world (both speakers and attendees). After the conference I was thinking about one of the differentiating characteristics between an average affiliate marketer and a super affiliate. For the purposes of this post I consider any affiliate who makes over $10,000 profit per month a super affiliate. However, from my experience top super affiliates can make over $100,000 per month profit and several make in excess $1,000,000 per month.

Several affiliate marketing blogs exist including this one that provide real world money making tips. However, what we tend to talk about are ways that we have made the money (in effect, we let the cat out of the bag) - by the time you go ahead and reproduce those ideas the market becomes saturated. Therefore, while money can be made quite easily by following our recipes the truth is that true super affiliates make lots of money because they are able to think outside the box, not just reproduce the same ideas over and over.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX - EXAMPLE #1

For instance, at the Elite Retreat I talked about how I created a paid search campaign for UGG Australia Boots in November 2006 - I noticed in previous years that UGG Boots sell like hot cakes in the winter and there always seems to be a supply demand issue whenever I walk through a department store; however, I figured online there are multiple vendors who sell UGG Boots and have affiliate marketing programs (i.e., Zappos, Shoes.com, UGG Australia.) Using competitive research software called KeyCompete I was able to download a list of about 190 keywords and create a campaign on Google that I set LIVE within about 15 minutes of the original idea - that one campaign netted about $30K per month in commission (about $15K profit) since November - not bad for 15 minutes of work.

Why did I choose UGG Australia?

Easy. I am a big believer that playing seasonality, holidays, and reality TV provides huge opportunities for affiliate marketers. For instance, you should be thinking about how you can promote affiliate offers for summer (i.e., Life is Good t-shirts), Easter (organic honey hams), and American Idol (top 24 contestants). The idea is to think outside the box - unlike the average affiliate marketer who is more interested in doing what everyone else is doing. If you are able to start bidding on keywords like “Lakisha Jones” before she is deemed by Simon the front runner on American Idol or if you are able to get in on the ground floor of an innovative idea you can make serious money.

By the way, my UGG Australia idea has probably been remanufactured a couple of dozen times, which is OK by me - GO FOR IT! However, that’s not the point - the point is to think of shit like that (before I do!) as a strategy for building your affiliate marketing business.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX - EXAMPLE #2

Here’s another example of thinking outside the box by someone who has defined himself as an industry leading affiliate by setting the standard and doing things differently.

QuitYourDayJob - Jeremy Palmer

Jeremy Palmer is a well-known entrepreneur within the affiliate marketing community - he has a popular blog called QuitYourDayJob.com and an e-book where he discloses how he made over $1,000,000 in commission in 1-year - it’s my understanding that in the early days of his career Jeremy made most of his income through affiliate marketing search arbitrage (PPC & SEO). However, since the early days Jeremy has steadily re-defined his approach to make what I would guess is a few more million in affiliate commissions and e-book sales.

Most recently I stumbled upon one of Jeremy’s newest money making methods that is clearly outside the box and in my opinion is brilliant.

Jeremy recently launched an affiliate marketing campaign to promote MSN Adcenter - he titles the name of the project “Discover Powerful Microsoft® AdCenter Secrets that Will Help You Explode Your Online Income.” His campaign pitch is located HERE.

Jeremy Palmer

Jeremy very creatively (and professionally) presents his visitors with the ability to learn more about MSN AdCenter through an educational video he himself produced, while also providing his visitors with the ability to save money by signing up as a new MSN AdCenter advertiser.

Note that Jeremy has at least two clear goals for his AdCenter campaign. However, both goals have the same outcome, which = make more money!

First, Jeremy wants to get his user to sign-up for a video tutorial that shows them “how to significantly increase their search advertising ROI and master Microsoft AdCenter.” Second, and most importantly, Jeremy includes an affiliate link on the page for his visitors to get a $50 CREDIT for opening a new account on Microsoft AdCenter.

Note that in order to get the video you have to supply Jeremy with your contact information (name / e-mail). Once you sign-up he immediately sends you an e-mail that includes a link to the video, another [affiliate] link to the MSN AdCenter $50 Coupon, and a link to his website where he sells his e-book.

Now this is what I call outside the box affiliate marketing.

Clearly, MSN AdCenter has agreed to pay Jeremy a nice commission for every visitor to his website that he can convert into an AdCenter advertiser. To make this happen Jeremy has gone to great lengths…including producing his own educational video, creating a professional “newsletter,” and capturing the user’s contact information so he can re-market to them in the future. For instance, he may promote his e-book or just simply use the contact info to continue promoting the original MSN Adcenter coupon…or any future videos he may put out (if he hasn’t already), including a Google Adwords or Yahoo Search Marketing educational video, along with a masterfully embedded series of affiliate links.

Do I think Jeremy is making money off this idea - absolutely!

Do I think you can do the same? Of course, but that’s not the point of this post.

The purpose of this post is to encourage you to think ouside the box so that you can become a super affiliate or conversely, if you are already a super affiliate ($10K+ per month) I want to to think outside the box about how you can make even more money.

Trust me, I personally have friends who are generating millions in profit per month through affiliate marketing - as long as that’s the case I will continue to think outside the box so that I can (or teach others) to make more than they do.

YouTube Video Award Winners Announced

YouTube announced today the winners of the first ever YouTube Video Awards.

AND THE YOUTUBE WINNERS ARE:

Here it goes again
Most Creative - “Here It Goes Again” by OKGo

This video is one of the coolest videos ever - check out how these guys use six treadmills to create a sort of music video - totally off the wall, but uber creative and well choreographed. However, I’m not sure I like the song anymore, but I definitely love the video!

Not my favorite video, but definitely has some entertainment value. However, there were a ton of funnier videos than this one. Heck, we even shot a video of a naked crazy man that ranks #2 on Google for “Naked Crazy Man” and ended up with a few thousands views.

This is a weird rant from a guy who is pretty down-to-earth and funny - when he tries to cover up his bald spot I just about shlit my pants. WARNING: This is an 8+ minute video so make sure you have the time - it’s difficult to turn it off once you start it. This guy meets diagnosis for about 10 different psychological disorders; however, he’s probably one of the most fun guys to be around ever (next to Neil Patel from PronetAdvertising.com).

Ask a Ninja

This one is really stupid - not sure what is so cool about it. In general, it’s really silly that this guy would dress as a ninja and talk about nothing. Well, to give the video some credit it was voted “best series.” I guess this means that there may be better videos put out by “Ask the Ninja,” but I’m not too interested in watching any more. Ask a Ninja inspired my friend Shmuly put out a series called “Ask a Jew” - now that is a pretty cool series.

Love this girl - she is an awesome artist….This is the kind of stuff YouTube is all about - prior to her putting music videos out on YouTube she was playing in front of about 50 people a night - because of her popularity on YouTube she was recently signed by Island Records (nice call Island) and is about to put out her first big record - I predict it will go platinum and we’ll be seeing her on the VMA’s and the Grammy’s.

Again, this is what YouTube is all about - very powerful video. The ability to put out a positive, powerful, compelling video like this one and have over 12 million people view it is outstanding. I just hugged my entire staff and gave my dog two bones.

Yeah - this video was made to promote a music record, but we can look past that since the message is really tht strong.

Most Adorable - “Kiwi!” by Madyeti47

Definitely a cool video with excellent animation. Also, I have to agree that it is adorable, especially when the bird grows her tiny wings and is able to fly.

Not that this video has anything to do with cartoons like the Simpsons and Southpark, but I never really got into those shows - I’m not against cartoons, but for whatever the reason I find it hard to identify with the characters.

OK “Meet the Pepperjam Team” fans, this week we have an at one point live and uncut video with one of Pepperjam’s Senior Affiliate Managers, Mandy Foley.

Mandy Foley is really new to the Pepperjam Team, but new doesn’t always mean inexperienced, Mandy brings a fire to the Affiliate team that has rarely been seen around the Pepperplex and frankly a lot of us are a little frightened. Mandy discusses her love of skiing, (and her olympic dreams) travel and the fashion industry.

So without further ado, meet Mandy Foley:

Elite Retreat - Day 2 - Morning Session #2 with Forum / Community Expert Lee Dodd

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

After a brief break Lee Dodd, Elite Retreat Cofounder was up to talk about building communities (i.e., forums) and buying and selling web properties.

Lee Dodd

- Lee has purchased websites totalling several hundred thousand dollars.
- Last year, through Lee’s various communities, generated over $1 million last year.

LEE DODD ON ACQUIRING WEBSITE PROPERTIES:

- Lee uses Sitepoint to purchase web sites.
- Lee does both (buying and selling) on a regular basis. For instance, on Friday Lee sold a forum that he bought for $4,500 for $27,500. What’s cool about this particular sale is that Lee acquired the website just three months ago - almost $25K in three months is nice.
- Lee says when selling a web property a key is full disclosure - how was traffic acquired (paid / SEO), when was it established, what’s the Page rank, use screen shots,
- Lee says SitePoint costs $20 (basic listing fee) and can be as high as $65 - in other words, very inexpensive.
- Lee talks about the very fast-paced nature of buying and selling web domains (properties)
- Lee says he uses SitePoint, DigitalPoint and his own property EarnersForum to buy and sell web properties.

- Lee mentions another website called WebHostingTalk - he says it’s a source for a range of things, including buying and selling domains.
- Lee mentions BizBuySell as another source for buying and selling.
- Lee says that two of the more important things he looks for is traffic and incoming links. He stresses that PageRank is not on the top of his list.

Not surprisingly, Lee is getting tons of Q’s from attendees - he is a real expert here and it’s pretty phenomenal to think that you can buy a website for X and then sell it for mega profits just a few months or a year or so later.

- Lee talks about the various ways to monetize web properties.
- Lee encourages attendees to really think about their goals when buying and selling web properties.

- Lee suggests that monetization is not his main motive - he believes in building the community.
- When Lee purchases a web property for under $5K he uses PayPal and escrow.com for sales over $5K.
- Lee said that he doesn’t only purchase web communities..

LEE DODD ON BUILDING COMMUNITIES:

- For starters, if you don’t like people, Lee says running forums is not for you.
- Lee said running forums is very fun and can be extremely profitable.
- Lee and one of the attendees who is part owner of a major forum talk about the benefit of user generated content, which search-engines love.
- Lee talks about needing to create a team when launching a community (he refers to this as a “Launch team”) - you just can’t do it alone. There are companies you can pay, but it general Lee doesn’t recommend that. He suggested that building a team of trusted people (friends / family) works well.
- Lee said it’s important to control how many forums you have within your community.

- Lee references one of his popular communities, EarnersForum.com, where he held a contest in combination with the launch of the website - he gave away over $20K in prizes and promoted the contest through the blogosphere.
- The best volunteer is someone who is loyal and active.

LEE DODD ON MONETIZING COMMUNITIES:

- Adsense / YPN
- CPM (Tribual Fusion, Value Click, Casell, Burst Media)
- CPA / Affiliate (works best on niche forums - i.e., Lee mentions his guitar community).
- Sponsorships / Private Advertisers
- Text Link sales
- Subscriptions / Premium Memberships (i.e., EarnersForum.com).
- AuctionAds
- Intellitext

Lee opens it up to Q & A.

NEXT UP - ME. I’m gonna talk about affiliate marketing and search arbitrage. Unfortunately, I can’t LIVE blog my own forum! However, I’m expecting to blog my reflections on the entire conference. Also - I may potentially do video on Guy Kawasaki’s keynote, which comes up after my presentation.

I hope you enjoyed my LIVE blogging of Elite Retreat - San Francisco. This was an amazing conference and I strongly consider you attend one of our future conferences later this year. (Orlando / May 2007, Chicago / July 2007, Phoenix / September, Dallas / November). CLICK HERE to learn more.

Wendy from eMoms is also blogging the event and Darren and Jeremy also put out posts.

Elite Retreat - Day 2 - Morning Session #1 with Blogging Expert Darren Rowse

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

After a lite breakfast…Darren Rowse opened Day 2 of Elite Retreat

Darren is one of the top bloggers in the world - his most popular blog, ProBlogger.net, is recognized by Technorati as a Top 50 blog.

Darren Rowse

Darren asks: Why Blog?

- Darren suggests that what’s most attractive about blogging is the fact that it “gives you a voice,” especially across boundaries (geographical, relationship, etc.).
- Darren has about 40,000 - 50,000 readers per day across his various blogs.
- Darren suggests blogging allows you to increase your profile. He offers an example where he wrote a post about the Lord of the Rings and a day or two later he got a call from the New York Times for an interview -he thought this was peculiar bec/ he didn’t see himself as an expert on LOTR.
- Darren talks about his high blogging profile results in numerous opportunities, including lucrative job offers, television interviews, and daily calls from reporters around the world.
- Darren talks about building a community and how blogging allows you to build a following who, in turn, become friends and supporters…even if you’ve never met the person. i.e., your readers often come to your support if someone writes a combative or negative comment or if another blogger questions your efforts.
- Darren goes intodetail about building trust through blogging. Very interesting perspective here - Darren really believes in giving his readers valuable information and over time the blog becomes a resource for the reader. FYI: Darren has garnered a reputation (much like Shoemoney.com) for offering useful information for how people can make money online, especially by monetizing blogging.

DARREN ANSWERS: HOW DO YOU MAKE MONEY WITH BLOGGING?

- He talks about Direct Methods (i.e., selling ad space, CPC, CPM, Sponsorships, Text links [ex. text-link-ads / adbrite], Blog Ads, RSS Ads, affiliate programs) and Indirect Methods.
- Darren says that affiliate programs work best on niche blogs. He says keys to successful affiliate programs include relevancy (think niche), trust, and positioning.
- Darren talks about other ways of making money, including membership areas, merchandise, selling blogs, paid reviews, donations, job boards, polls).
- Darren, Aaron Wall, and Jeremy Schoemaker talk about paid reviews (i.e., ReviewMe, PayPerPost). Darren doesn’t do paid reviews but he is not against it as he believes that it is one way for bloggers to make $$$ and blog for a living or to supplement income. Aaron talks about ReviewMe and how some bloggers make as much as $10K or more per month, but most make less than that. Jeremy talks about he’s playing with the service but oesn’t want to “sell out.” Currently, you can us reviewMe to get Jeremy to write a review for $750 - the highest allowed by ReviewMe - he’s had several people wanting him to review their stuff…but he has yet to do it…He said he will disclose the paid review if he does it.

DARREN’S 11 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR BLOG STICKY

- Use a Newsletter
- Highlight key Posts / Related Posts
- Promote your RSS feed
- Be conversational (ask Q’s)
- Build community
- Make readers famous
- Give readers jobs (i.e., moderators)
- What does your blog say in the first 10 seconds?
Provide a search function
- Use polls and other interactive tools

Darren opens it up to Q & A.

Wendy from eMoms is also blogging the event and Darren and Jeremy also put out posts.

Elite Retreat - Day 1 - Afternoon Session #2 with SEO Legend Aaron Wall

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Next up on the agenda is Aaron Wall of SEOBook.com.

Aaron Wall

- Aaron Wall is author of SEO Book, which is the world’s leading book on SEO - it is required reading if you want to use SEO to maximize organic search traffic to your website.

- Aaron shows search results analysis using one his favorite tools - the Firefox SEO Extension.

- Aaron talks about his kitchen cabinet website - he gives a pretty detailed analysis of each website and how they rank well (i.e., college grants).

- Aaron talks about “Link Equity” - the idea was that sometimes it is better to expand existing content on existing pages instead of building new pages. He uses an example of a website with 10K pages, 90% of which Google has already indexed. He said by adding more pages what is likely to happen is the % of pages indexed by Google will go down. Instead - he suggests a better strategy may be to just add more content to existing, well-ranked pages that are already indexed. He suggests this maximizes link equity versus diluting the link equity by creating more pages without adding more external links.

- In response to a question from an attendee about keyword density Aaron says the more your content looks “like a newspaper writer wrote it and less that it was written for search-engines” the better your website is likely to rank. He says he doesn’t really pay attention to keyword density.

- Aaron says that there is a clear advantage to buying URL’s with trusted links.

- Aaron gave a free copy of his book to everyone in the room (nice!).

LINK BUILDING WITH AARON WALL

- Start off with trusted link sources such as the Yahoo Directory and Business.com. He suggested that by starting off with “good votes” you build a foundation and are not likely to be penalized for lower quality links that you build in the future.
- Aaron talks about buying links versus buying websites with trusted links versus building links naturally.

Social Media & Viral Links:

- Aaron discusses about purposefully making blog posts with the likelihood of emotional responses - this builds links and gets people talking.
- Controversial posts work well for building links from sites like Digg.
- “Spam is loosely based on perception.” Therefore, to get other people to submit your spam it makes it less spammy.
- Aaron talks about getting links from social media websites is good because the links come from the general web (diverse websites).
- Minimize ads on the pages you submit to social media websites.
- Aaron warns that Google may discount unnatural link growth - therefore, he stresses the need to build authority links outside of social media.

- Aaron talks about a company he has an equity stake in - ReviewMe.com - as a source for blog reviews and links.

- An attendee suggested that Yahoo Directory usually keeps your link up even if you cancel it, which makes it free.

Aaron opens up to Q & A. There were tons of Q’s!!!

Wendy from eMoms is also blogging the event and Darren and Jeremy also put out posts.
